Aliens Vs Predator Chess Set

Creating chess sets out of film tie-ins is nothing new, but this set featuring Aliens vs Predators still sends shivers down my spine.

Its a pretty neat looking set with the themed design working its way down to the base of either the Aliens vs Predator set, or the Ripley vs Aliens set further down.

I’d get one if I wasn’t trying to minimise what I own…

Designer Cakes

Nothing will be beyond the “designer” tag, which prefixing practically anything implies something that looks good and is probably expensive too.

But with cakes, why not? ‘The Girl with the most Cake’ is the name of a cake company run by artist/designer team Linda Bartlett and Amy Forrest.

They make extraordinary, one of a kind centre pieces which they emphasize, has quality ingredients and taste to match.

I think if you have the imagination and creativity, you should apply it with any skill that you have (such as making cakes).

It’s just a shame that these would no doubt disappear very quickly.

Dog Riding the Waves

As usual, the Boston Globe’s Big Picture has another series of high quality photos. This time, its surfing.

Not being a surfer, I do tend to think alot of surfing photos feel quite similar. I can’t really appreciate quite what’s going on in them. But at least the clarity of these shots are refreshing in the hot weather we’re having right now.

And the dog does make me smile. Its a boston terrier participating at the 3rd Annual Loews Coronado Bay Resort surf dog competition (the largest surfing competition for dogs).

Maura Cluthe has a beautifully presented bottle cap collection. These look great and the idea of collecting these make for a nice portable collection of retro styling, graphics and brands.

These remind me a little of stamp collecting where you get to keep a record of mini pieces of art. These bottle caps seem a lot cooler though, somehow.

Amazing, Polished, Insectoid Lifeforms and Human Parts Sculptures by Christopher Conte

Christopher Conte creates these amazing, polished sculptures depicting insectoid lifeforms and human parts.

After earning a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art, he entered the prosthetics field and began making artificial limbs for amputees in New York. Combining an abiding love for sculpture, medical science and biomechanics, the field enables Chris to apply his natural talents to help others in less fortunate situations, which he still does to this day.

In 2007, Chris began offering these unique sculpture pieces for sale to the public for the first time. They are each made from a combination of different materials such as Cast Polyurethane, Glass-filled Nylon, Carbon Fiber, Stainless Steel and antique metals.

His work has been recently covered in Wired, Popular Science, Make Magazine, and used by The Discovery Channel and MTV Networks.

Ana Beatriz Miniature Scenes

Brazil’s Rita de Cássia Baduy Pires of Ana Beatriz Miniatures, creates amazing little miniature scenes set on a ratio of 1:7.8 inches.

She has been working on her art for 20 years, conceiving her own scale to differentiate her work from regular dollhouse dimensions.

Pires actually makes every single piece in her artistic dioramas—violins, copper pots in a kitchen, Japanese teapot—which are created from wood, paper, clay and scrap metal in her atelier in Curitiba.

She comes up with different scenes under their respective themes, with film and music the most requested and are those that happen to require the most detail.

Custom orders always float in from clients who want miniature recreations of real-life places.

Yoghurt Spoon Design

Why this design for a yoghurt spoon wasn’t created earlier, I’ve no idea! Its simple and yet so obvious.

Surely manufacturers of cutlery should be creating variations of this soon? Unless its all a conspiracy and they don’t want us to finish off those last scraps of yoghurt left in the corner of the pot.

Robotic Sculptures by Ann P. Smith

Ann Smith spends her days making little robotic like figurines from broken electronics and machine parts. There are a couple of artists whose work I’ve seen online, who also create similar things, but Ann’s look quite elegant and actually work as kinetic sculptures!

They’re sold in stores and galleries throughout the US and have been published as illustrations in magazines and brochures.

On her website you can view a couple of animations of some pieces and you can also buy both the sculptures and prints of them from her Etsy store.

Mobile Phone Art

Artist Rob Pettit collected 5,000 mobile phones and created an art show out of them to highlight the proliferation and waste of cell phones.

If these “art” pieces are sold at a high price, then that’s a job well done, I’d say! Of course, the proceeds should go to researching recycling methods of mobile phone materials.

Container Shaped Food Photography

Zach Kowalczyk has a Flickr photo set for food that takes the shape of its container. Its a simple idea and creates some striking, sometimes humorous images.

I’m often trying to spend more time with photography and wanting to come up with just a simple idea for a series of good looking shots. Nothing complicated (yet), and so this provides some nice inspiration.
