Al Jaffee’s Fold-Ins for Mad Magazine
If you used to read Mad Magazine, then you’ll love this feature from the New York Times. Its Al Jaffee’s fold-ins for Mad magazine, from the 1960s to the present, in interactive form.

From my point of view, a simple but good use of Flash’s new (ish) ability to skew bitmaps.

Photo Manipulation : Circus Freak Bride and Phoenix
Yana Rudenko, who works under the banner Raven Concepts, has some really nice design work on her portfolio website. The following two examples of her photo manipulation work caught my eye, with their lush, colourful textures.
The following image was inspired by the HBO’s series Carnival, and depicts a “Circus Freak Bride” .

This image is call Phoenix. Yana produced this work by testing out tutorials she found online.

Sci-Fi Film Concept Artist and Illustrator Marc Gabbana
Marc Gabbana is an illustrator and concept artist who works in the advertising, publishing and motion picture industries. He has a truly awesome portfolio of work for films, advertising, and publishing as well as for his own personal ideas.

His first experience in Hollywood was on the movie Spawn, which opened a new arena in which Motion Picture Visual Development offered him the opportunity to see his designs come to life on the big screen. Marc fulfilled a lifelong dream by becoming a Star Wars concept artist for both The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones directed by George Lucas.

His other film credits include Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius, 8 Mile, Hellboy and IMAX’s first all CG 3D movie Cyberworld where he worked as the Production Designer. He also worked as illustrator and concept designer on the Wachowski brothers’ sequels Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions which were immediately followed by The Polar Express directed by Robert Zemeckis with Doug Chiang’s design team.

Anatomy of a Gummi Bear and Balloon Dog
Jason Freeny, under the moniker Moist Productions has created these wonderfully imaginative illustrations describing the anatomy of a gummi bear and a balloon dog.

Combining the usual (a sweet or a balloon) with the unusual (er - the anatomy), Jason seems to have had alot of fun coming up with these quirky ideas!
There’s more on his website, where you can also get signed prints and other stuff.
Via Io9:
Some mad scientist decided to make gummi bears more juicy by using Frankensteiny technology to give them tiny circulatory systems and crunchy little veins…

Art Fantastic - Illustrations by Bruce Jensen
Here are some fantastic pieces of imaginative art by Bruce Jensen. From Ann and Jeff VanderMeer’s column on io9.com:

“Bruce Jensen is an artist whose work you’ve probably seen more times than you can remember. Over seven seasons, his art montages formed the backdrop to hundreds of segments on the CBS show 60 Minutes II.
“Jensen has also done cover art for such classics as Neal Stephenson’s Snowcrash and The Diamond Age.
“His work tends toward bold color choices, using a style that can be whimsical or more severe, recalling the architectural surrealism of an artist like Magritte.”

iPhone and iPod Touch Wallpapers via Poolga
With the second generation iPhone supposedly due out next month in June, there might be a rush of new customers, me included!
To help customise all our new iPhones, website Poolga.com provides a selection of free wallpapers, lovingly created by designers and illustrators from around the world.
I love the format - at 320 x 480 pixels, the size is nice and compact and perhaps easy to repurpose other graphics for.

Watercolour Artist David Scheirer
Its been awhile since I’ve seen any watercolour work. No idea why. But I just came across artist David Scheirer’s website which he uses to showcase his drawings, watercolors, paintings, comics, and photographs.
Here are a couple of his watercolours.

Before embarking on my design training, I’d previously been using watercolours all my (student) life. There’s something about the medium which allows it to capture the sensibility of life over other media and seeing David’s work is making me itch for a paintbrush again.
To see more of David’s work, visit his website, Studio Tuesday

Artist and Writer Ben Templesmith
I’ve found Ben Templesmith’s visual work to be one of the most eye catching comic styles around today. His slightly raw but viscous style style really has a character of its own as well as being able to convey some sort of energy and humour.
I first came across his work in the comic series 30 Days of Nights, and since then, have been a fan of his self-written Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse.

Ben Templesmith is an artist and writer most widely known for his work in the American comic book industry where he has received multiple nominations for the industry’s top prize, the Eisner Award.
As a comic artist his most notable works have been 30 Days of Night and Fell. His other projects include the critically acclaimed serial Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse, Hatter M, and Singularity 7.
He has also worked on the Star Wars, Army of Darkness, Silent Hill and Buffy: The Vampire Slayer properties and produces art and design for music bands, dvds, toys, and film concept work.

Check out more of Ben’s work on Templesmith.com, where you can peruse his blog and subscribe to his Twitter thoughts.

Simplify Your Work, Office-Style
I don’t often check out that many websites promoting office software, but the latest from Microsoft is prompting me to rethink my surfing priorities!

Its a simple enough site, with a “Simplify your work” concept. Different sections - one for each piece of software, collectively promote and explain the new Microsoft Office 2008.
But like all good design, the site carries through the idea to all the elements. A sense of life is given through the characters that are simply depicted, but which are very well done. Animation is slick and very descriptive, giving a slightly comical, light heart feeling to the site.
Worth checking out, even if you’re not planning on getting the software..

Incredible Custom Ambigrams by Artist Tiffany Harvey
Artist Tiffany Harvey offers custom ambigram design! What is an Ambigram? I’ll let Tiffany do the explantion:
I like to think of ambigrams as a merging of calligraphy and optical illusions. While there are many ways to warp a word, I focus on rotational designs ~ one word appears the same when up-side down, or flips to create a whole new word.

I’ve always been fascinated by the creativity and design skills required to create one of these, especially since reading Dan Brown’s book “Angels and Demons” and seeing this technique featured. The results also look quite good.
Well, now its possible to have one of these custom designed, where one word only costs $25! Tiffany also offers a choice of different font styles.
