Penguin UK’s New 007 Covers
I do like these! Penguin UK re-released Ian Fleming’s James Bond classics earlier in the year with designs like the following. I think using these slinky, female characters seems to sum up the series quite well and the style seems to have a bit of that 70’s vibe.

Vintage Logos Collection
The logos below are from an excellent Flickr set showing a collection of vintage logos from a mid-70’s edition of the book World of Logotypes.

Shame its all in black and white, but I guess that kinda adds to the appeal.

Super Creative Business Cards
There are some super creative business cards out there, and a post about them seems to be popular. I’ve come across a few but here are some of my favourite ones that I’ve seen recently.

Steampunk Phone
This Steampunk Phone is a conceptual prototype by Londoner Arthur Schmitt. No touch screen, no video, no game and no button! It includes a earpiece, gauges, visible screws, a rugged brown scheme, a spinning number-counter. It uses punch cards and binary phone numbers to control your phone’s features and make calls.

All pretty cool and a nice little antidote to all the flashy gadgets out there. Providing of course, that you have all the time in the world to make a call.

Leather Pac Man Seats
These quality looking, leather Pac Man seats are ingeniously targeted at those who were raised on Pac Man and who’ve (theoretically) grown up and acquired disposable incomes.

I.e. They’re probably expensive, but no price seems to be set yet. Still, they’re pretty cool.

More Soon
More Soon is a new studio set up by Carl Burgess, who is ex-Hi-Res! I can see a little Hi-Res in the studio website, but that fleshy circular thing has to be seen in motion.
I’ve no idea what it is, but it rotates down, animating these layered, glistening flesh slices! It’s a little mesmerising and repulsive at first. It made me stare.

A Fridge for Flatshare
I think this is one definite case of an image speaks a thousand words, except it doesn’t need that many. This is quite obviously a unit-based fridge system that makes it ideal for flatshares.
I’ve no idea how it works, whether its modulised and detachable and therefore powered by the base unit, but a great way for lodgers to take responsibility for their own fridge is if they had their own box and simply moved in and stacked it.
Designed by Stefan Buchberger as part of Design Lab 2008.

Marian Bantjes New Laser Cut Poster Design : Design Ignites Change
Decorative typographer favourite of mine Marian Bantjes, created a poster for the design unit within the Academy for Educational Development, a DC-based international non-profit.

It says “Design Ignites Change” and is part of a series of posters that they do to
promote the importance of design in development work.
It sounds like the laser cut poster (a print one in the works) which Marian had cut from the front to incorporate the laser burn, is no longer available.

Victorian-Era Gadgets at The British Library
Victorian style is quite trendy in some ways, with the steam punk movement and mechanical elements that are in contrast with the slick, minimal style of today’s technological gadgets.
The British Library in London therefore presents a small and timely collection of Victorian era gadgets in its Business and Intellectual Property Centre.

Take this as an example - a tiny machine complete with its own map that would tell motorists which way to go. Miniature scrolls bearing the directions were loaded onto the watch and revolved as the wearer continued his journey.
I can only guess that drivers could revolve the maps without endangering the operation of their vehicles. A far cry from today!
Maurice Collins, a retired businessman from Muswell Hill, London, has a collection of 1,400 historic gadgets and cherry-picked 50 must-have items for the exhibition at the British Library.
Mr Morris said his collection was a celebration of ‘ingenious products that attempted to solve human difficulty’.
To see more of the items on display, check out The Daily Mail.

The Nike Burger by Olle Hemmendorff
This is the excellent burger interpretation of the Nike Air Max 90 by Olle Hemmendorff, a Swedish illustrator/designer who was commissioned by Nike (along with 7 other artists) to “interpret” their sneakers.
Great, quirky idea - make something up out of unexpected materials. I especially like the contrast in fast food and “sporty” footwear.
