Crocodile Scarring Ritual Video

National Geographic has an intense, stomach-turning video from Papua New Guinea. It shows men undergoing scarification to make their skin resemble that of a crocodile, as part of a rite of passage into manhood.

Croc-Scarring

Its a compelling watch when the “slicing” begins. I can understand how bearing the pain will prepare you for the future however. But I’m mixed in terms of the necessity for this ritual, probably because I don’t know the culture there.

I watched this on telly, it was a show called ‘taboo’ – I don’t think hurting oneself proves anything, even though it is in one’s culture. I believe we are to care for our bodies and not harm it in any way.
